It's never too late
to ride.

CAAN helps Pierce County adults 55 and older get back on a bike, at their own pace, with the bikes, routes and riding companions to make it easy.

1 in 4adults over 55 are physically inactive

The need is real, and it's right here.

Physical inactivity is a leading driver of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, fall-related injury, cognitive decline and social isolation. In Pierce County, roughly 60,000 residents over 55 can be assumed to be inactive.

CAAN is here to help, one ride at a time.

What is CAAN?

Building on programs that already work

The Cycling for Active Aging Network adapts the existing programs of three established Pierce County organizations to be more welcoming to adults 55 and older.

We focus especially on people who are sedentary, who live with chronic health conditions, or who have never felt that cycling was for them. CAAN does not build from scratch. It adapts proven programs that are already running in our community.

Why 55? It's an age when many people are actively planning for change. When people take on new health habits, one of the strongest predictors of success is their readiness for change, and after 55 can be a natural time in life to start.

Why cycling?

Gentle on joints. Great for the heart. Good for the soul.

Cycling is uniquely suited to older adults returning to physical activity. It's low-impact, so it removes the joint stress that makes many other kinds of exercise hard as we age.

Up to 18%

lower risk of coronary disease with regular cycling

36%

lower diabetes risk with daily cycling

Better balance

improved balance and coordination that help prevent falls, plus mental, emotional and social benefits

E-bikes open the door even wider

Pedal-assist e-bikes let riders with limited fitness or chronic conditions ride at a comfortable effort, build endurance gradually, and enjoy the freedom of cycling without worrying about falling behind. Research confirms e-bikes provide moderate-intensity physical activity for adults with heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

How CAAN works

We remove the barriers that keep people off the bike

Most older adults who want to be more active run into the same handful of obstacles. CAAN is designed to clear each one.
